Yoga Therapy for Cancer

Exhausted from chemo? Mobility limited after surgery? Medications making you feel worse?

Things are tough right now.

You’re in the thick of it - trying to hold it together as best you can.

Physically, you feel absolutely awful. What could possibly help? You’re willing to give just about anything a go.

But the anxiety you’re feeling about your health is there every minute of every day. And you have no idea how to manage it.

Time spent with your family is filled with worry - you can see it in their faces. You’re scared, too.

On top of everything else, you can’t remember the last time you had a good night’s sleep.

Is any of this resonating?

Now imagine…

Getting out of bed in the morning no longer feels impossible - you’ve actually got some energy back.

Managing your anxiety feels doable. Because you’ve got practical tools and tips in your back pocket - like breathing exercises - for when you need an extra bit of help.

Symptoms and side effects from the treatment or medications you’re taking are finally under control, and you know exactly what you can do if you have a flare up.

Your family is noticing a change in you. Knowing you’re getting extra support is helping them feel more at ease - giving you more energy to focus on your own healing.

By the end of the day, you’re able to fall asleep easily - and rest solidly through the night.

Yoga Therapy could help with all of this.

Here’s what one of my lovely clients had to say:

“I had just had major surgery and was recovering. I felt low, withdrawn, and isolated.

Sue’s restorative yoga sessions helped my rehabilitation. The sessions also changed my mindset when it comes to dealing with things.

I now use the breathing techniques Sue taught me in many different situations. I feel confident again. Knowing that Sue is always there to offer support and advice is not only reassuring, but comforting.”

I’ve supported dozens of women - like you - with therapeutic yoga

All types of yoga can be therapeutic.

What makes yoga therapy different is using various yogic tools - like postures/movements, breathwork, and meditation - to specifically address your physical, emotional, and mental state of being.

As a yoga therapist, my aim is to guide you, hold space for you, and support you in whatever way I can.

Using my yogic knowledge and my experience as an oncologist and palliative care nurse, I create personalised yoga therapy sessions to give you:

  • A few moments every week for you
It’s a time for focusing only on yourself - your healing, your body.

  • Peace of mind
Hospital waiting rooms making you anxious? With the practical tools you’ll learn in our sessions, you can help reduce your own stress when confronted with difficult situations.

  • More energy to spend with your family
They say you can’t fill from an empty cup. And one of the hardest things is seeing the effect your diagnosis is having on those you love. When you get extra support through yoga therapy, your family can get back more of you.

Every session I teach is different because every one of my clients has different needs.

Wherever you are in your journey, therapeutic yoga can strengthen you physically, mentally, and emotionally. And when you feel stronger all round, you can heal more easily.

Yoga Therapy is perfect for you if you’re:

  • Recently diagnosed
Getting ahead of things can make all the difference. Starting a complementary therapy early on can help you better manage the effects of any other traditional treatments you may undergo.

  • Recovering from surgery
Even if your mobility is limited, yoga therapy can help. There are guided meditations and breathing exercises we can do no matter how you feel physically. And we’ll always go at a pace that feels good for you.

  • Struggling to manage symptoms and side effects
You’ll be gently guided in specific movements and postures to help with whatever symptoms or side effects you’re currently experiencing. Yoga therapy works wonders - you’d be surprised!

  • In remission
Whatever stage you’re in, yoga therapy is fab for staying active, healthy, and cancer-free. The lingering worry of it returning can be troublesome, though - the tools you learn during our sessions can help keep these fears under control.

  • Dealing with any other long-term condition
I work with a range of clients - not all of whom have been diagnosed with cancer. Yoga therapy works for anyone who’s struggling and wants to better manage their symptoms.

What to expect from our sessions.

Remember, I’m here to support you - our sessions are a judgement-free zone!

At the beginning of every yoga therapy session, I’ll do a check-in with you to see how you’re feeling that day and find out what you’d like to focus on.

If something’s troubling you, please do feel you can share with me. Any and all emotions are welcome! It’s important you feel comfortable - no matter what state of mind (or body!) you’re in.

As every session is tailored-to-you, there will be variations depending on your physical ability and range of motion. Usually, I’ll guide you through a combination of gentle movement, meditation, and breathwork.

By the end of the session, you’ll feel more relaxed and at peace. You’ll be equipped with some practical suggestions to try out for yourself in between sessions.

And as our sessions are virtual, you never have to leave the comfort of your own home. After we say our goodbyes, feel free to continue meditating or resting for however long you’d like.

Still have questions about Yoga Therapy?

Here are some answers for you…

  • What makes yoga therapy different to a traditional yoga practice, is instead of me simply teaching you different yoga techniques and poses, our 1:1 sessions are created to serve and support you on your own personal health journey. Whatever you might be dealing with, you’re given guidance on how to improve your overall well-being from a whole body-mind-spirit perspective.

  • There are so many! Yoga therapy may help reduce anxiety and depression, which so often come along with a cancer diagnosis. You may not be getting good sleep - either from the medication you’re on or from staying awake worrying - or both!  Yoga therapy could help with this, too. And by reducing the effects of your anxiety, depression, and helping you get a good night’s rest, you may find you begin to heal more quickly.

Yoga therapy may also be used to reduce pain and inflammation, which has a knock-on effect. When you’re in less pain - or know exactly which poses to do when you have a flare up - you’re able to get on with your day.

  • Adding yoga therapy to your current cancer treatment plan is a great way to give yourself even more support as you battle The Big C. What’s great about yoga therapy is it works wonderfully in tandem with whatever conventional treatments you may already be undergoing.

  • Absolutely. There are actually several poses, breathing techniques, and meditations I can show you that may help minimise the effects of chemotherapy. My experience working as an oncology nurse also comes in handy here - I’ve got plenty of tips and tricks up my sleeve to support you!

  • No problem at all. Most people think “yoga” and immediately envision the most complex back-bend or headstand! This isn’t what yoga therapy is about at all. Wherever you are in your journey, and no matter your physical limitations - yoga therapy may help. I’ve worked with clients who have just had surgery - there are techniques and meditations we do that help with whatever you’re currently experiencing. And believe me, you do not have to be super flexible. You just need to come along to your session with an open mind.

  • Yes! Yoga therapy works wonders for all sorts of conditions, not only cancer. For example, it may be used to treat:

    Stress

    Depression

    Anxiety

    Postnatal depression

    Chronic back pain

    Musculoskeletal conditions

    Diabetes

    High Blood Pressure

    Parkinson’s Disease

    Asthma

    COPD

    MS

    IBS

    Heart Disease

    Insomnia

    Osteoporosis

…to name a few. If you’re curious about yoga therapy, reach out. I’d be glad to support you.
